The main objective of the programme is to increase the entrepreneurship and knowledge of heritage practitioners and community members. By doing so, local communities get more involvement and can benefit from sustainable tourism and develop other income generating activities.
This is also a way to reinforce the collaboration between local communities and heritage professionals, which is necessary for effective site conservation and management. Both groups should strive to accomplish a sustainable plan for African Heritage sites.
In particular, the programme is intended to develop knowledge and skills among heritage professionals and community members to enable them to:
• Undertake sustainable economic activities within World Heritage Sites that add value to the specific sites
• Build beneficial partnerships between heritage managers and communities to develop better management and get more benefits for the communities
